This summer marks the end of our first year as the Hartree Centre North East Hub.

The past twelve months have been a time for trialling, innovating and most importantly, supporting as many small-and-medium sized organisations as we could. There have been plenty of workshops, data projects and case studies that have filled the first year of the programme, read on for the highlights.

Highlights from The Past Year

Workshops

Over the course of the last 12 months or so, we have run three successful workshops for 25 different SMEs across the North and beyond that were looking to level-up their data strategies.

The workshops covered topics such as:

  • Value Innovation
  • Code vs No-Code
  • Large Language Models
  • Natural Language Processing
  • Machine Learning

There are more workshops on the horizon coming this Autumn, so if you weren’t able to join us, please keep your eyes peeled for upcoming dates for your diary.

Data Projects

11 of the SMEs that attended workshops submitted proposals for our longer-term Collaborative Data Projects, two of which have been successful.

Our Data Projects are up to 3-months long and involve working closely with our data scientists to scope your data science or engineering project, build a prototype solution, and explore options to deploy it within your organisation. Over the course of the year, we have successfully run 3 Open Calls this year leading to 9 successful long-term projects.

Feedback

It has been so wonderful to work alongside such interesting organisations. Here is some feedback that we have received this past year.

“The Hartree innovating with data masterclass is useful for people interested in data that have various experiences with data and data science. The scope covers a comprehensive journey, from initial problem identification, solution scoping, as well as practical techniques.”

Will Brown, Congnasist

Workshop Attendee

“I am happy with HARTREE! During my two days of "Data Innovation" training, I’ve acquired valuable knowledge in distinguishing between supervised and unsupervised machine learning techniques, enabling me to understand how algorithms learn from labelled data versus unlabelled data. Additionally, I’ve honed my online research skills, uncovering insights into the equations for business success—a fascinating blend of data innovation and visualization.”

Lawal Umar Daura, Abfad Limited

Workshop Attendee

“Hartree Centre North East Hub helped us to unlock the value and power of our data through a combination of visualisation and optimisation. We are now looking to pilot the prototype tool with an NHS Trust soon and gather feedback for further development. Actionable Insights have always been our goal and this project has accelerated us towards that goal faster than we could ever have imagined.”

Fenwick Smith, Floki Health

Collaborative Data Projects

“Our experience with the Hartree programme has been of immense value, not only in the excellence of their work for us, but in the important education in data science that we have received. The Hartree Centre North East Hub enabled us to move quickly in a space where we had very limited experience and only an outline hypothesis. We now have encouraging results which can be used to demonstrate the potential of our approach to investors.”

Dave Baillie, Seascape Surveillance

Collaborative Data Projects

What is the Hartree Centre North East Hub?

Our team is offering fully funded support to empower SMEs to learn about and adopt advanced digital technologies such as supercomputing, data analytics, visual computing, artificial intelligence (AI) and more.

The Hartree Centre North East Hub forms part of the Hartree National Centre for Digital Innovation (HNCDI) programme and is run in collaboration with Newcastle University, the National Innovation Centre for Data and Sunderland Software City.

Final Thoughts

There are still two years left of the programme and we have plenty of things in the pipeline. For updates and news from the North East Hub, please follow our LinkedIn page here or sign up to our newsletter.
